At Chateau Léoube, the vines are planted only 50 meters from the sea on soil which is over 800 million years old. As a personal lover of fine wine, Sir Anthony Bamford was quick to realize the similarity in latitude of Léoube to other coastal regions recognized for the quality of their Cabernet led wines. He set Romain Ott a mission; to produce a red wine, clearly different in style to the red wines currently showcased in the Léoube portfolio.
Grape maturation and ripening is followed closely to ensure harvest occurs at the optimum time to keep a balance to the wine through perfect tannic extraction. As always the practice at Chateau Leoube, the Cabernet grapes are manually harvested and selected grapes are placed in stainless steel tanks for a slow maceration. The length of the fermentation depends on the expert tasting of Romain Ott, and at the end of the slow maceration and natural alcoholic fermentation; the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels. It is then aged for 16 months before being bottled; significantly longer than the usual 9 months ageing required for Léoube red wines. Collector 2011 is the only red wine to be aged in new French oaked barrels, although a larger size of 600 Litres is preferred to ensure the wood characters are not too pronounced. The aging will continue in bottle, and the wine can be stored for up to 15+ years.
Made from 100% Cabernet Franc, this unique and original wine is presented in a dark, elegant and heavy bottle; preserving the style of Léoube whilst emphasising the additional weight this wine brings. Collector 2011 has a dense colour and rich blackberry flavours. The initial mouth feel is supple and silky, before revealing the structure and balance associated with the Léoube House style. The finish is powerful but controlled, and the rich flavours persist on the palate.
To enjoy Collector 2011 in its optimal condition, decant and serve at room temperature. The wine will continue to open and develop alluringly in the glass. A warming Autumnal wine, The Collector 2011 is a perfect match for traditional English stews, char-grilled meats and any variety of game.
